Exploring Stream In Our Community!

What is STREAM?!
STREAM stands for: Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, and Math

Kingsport City Schools is excited to offer a Summer STREAM Camp for rising 4th grade - 8th grade students the week of June 23-27, 2014. The camp is designed to spark interest in STREAM learning through hands-on, project-based learning in the areas of Chemistry, Digital Media, Engineering, Environmental Exploration, and Exploration of the Arts. Campers will work to search for solutions, discover new learning through exploration, design their own creation and learn about STEM careers. As a concluding project to demonstrate the application of student learning, students will develop a digital portfolio focused on key projects within the camp. Utilizing the 21st century skill of communication, campers will present their portfolio to an audience of peers and supporting stakeholders.

We are honored to partner with our community and regional partners to provide meaningful and engaging learning opportunities for our students. Eastman Chemical Company, ETSU Innovation STEM Hub, Kingsport Arts Council, and the Kingsport Engineering Group have provided support though guest speakers, donations of materials, and volunteers to facilitate and assist with activities.

The core objectives of the camp are designed to:
•Provide students with innovative, collaborative, and creative problem solving activities.
•Curriculum design is focused on the multidisciplinary integration of learning standards and instructional strategies to guide students with meaning making across content areas.
•Excite students about career opportunities that are available in STEM fields.
•Collaborate and work side-by-side with STREAM professionals and community stakeholders to promote and support STEM-rich learning environments for our students.
•Share best practices resulting from the Kingsport City Schools STREAM Camp with educators within our district and region.

Campers will have the opportunity to participate in activities focused on designing solutions to real world problems through:
•Exposure to STEM Career Opportunities
•Awareness of environmental concerns and their impact on society
•Exploration of arts within our community and their connection to STREAM
•Exploration of chemistry in our everyday lives through engagement in chemistry experiments
•Project-based engineering: Engineering Design Process
•Digital Leadership: Responsibility in our technological world
•Engagement with digital media – development of Digital Portfolio
•Communication and presentation of new learning
